Shared Ground

International Indigenous Graduate Drop-In

What is Shared Ground?

Shared Ground is a bi-monthly gathering created especially for international Indigenous graduate students. Whether you’re new to Canada or navigating the complexities of academia far from home, this space offers a welcoming and informal place to meet others walking similar paths.

We gather to share our experiences, challenges, and successes—everything from writing theses to finding community, understanding academic systems, and maintaining cultural ties while studying abroad.

When & Where

Schedule:
First Wednesday of the month | 10:00 AM – 1:00 PM
Third Wednesday of the month | 2:00 PM – 5:00 PM

Location: Research Hub (ARA 222) Olara

Who Can Attend?

Shared Ground is open to all graduate students at TRU or beyond who identify as Indigenous and/or are international students or are studying away from their home territories. We welcome Indigenous or ally students from across Turtle Island and beyond.

What to Expect

Each gathering is participant-driven and informal. Some sessions may focus on specific themes like:

  • Writing support & thesis navigation
  • Cultural reconnection and self-care
  • Peer to peer support
  • Guest speakers or storytelling circles
  • Language, land, and memory in research

You don’t need to prepare anything—just come as you are.

Why Join?

Being far from home and making your way through a hard academic program can be both exciting and isolating. Shared Ground offers:

  • Community: Meet fellow Indigenous graduate students from around the world and across Canada.
  • Support: Exchange strategies for research, writing, and navigating grad school.
  • Belonging: Stay grounded in your identity and culture while studying in a new place.
  • Mentorship & Connection: Learn from others’ journeys and build long-lasting relationships.
