KNOWLEDGE MAKERS

FOUNDED IN 2016

Knowledge Makers Indigenous student research network

Knowledge Makers was born from a desire to support Indigenous undergraduate students in becoming researchers.
Knowledge Makers started with fourteen students and a two-day workshop that explored Indigenous research. We came together with the support of our families, Elders, administrators, faculty, staff, and each other to create something that expresses the importance of being Indigenous researchers, and the breadth and possibilities of Indigenous research methodologies. This communal sharing of knowledge led to the inaugural Knowledge Makers publication.

Knowledge Makers is a collaborative teaching initiative where Indigenous undergraduate students learn the process of research, and how to publish research as Indigenous researchers. Based at Thompson Rivers University, we bring together up to 15 Indigenous undergraduate students each year from across the university to learn how to ‘make knowledge’ through a multi-modal approach.

Undergraduate Publication Program

The Knowledge Makers undergraduate publication program provides Indigenous students with the opportunity to share their research, stories, and academic work.

This program empowers students to contribute to the broader conversation on Indigenous knowledge and research, while building skills in academic publishing and leadership.

Cultural Exchange Program

This project focuses on increasing Indigenous students mobility and participation in intentionally created experiential learning opportunities. This is done by reducing two critical barriers: cost and wrap around supports.

This project encourages students to connect with their own cultures in relation to Indigenous cultures around the world, preparing them to be global citizens.

Future Growth

In the future, Knowledge Makers plans to expand with two new programs: Knowledge Seekers, and Knowledge Mentors.

Knowledge Seekers will inspire and empower K-12 students through Indigenous research and storytelling

Knowledge Mentors is designed to engage Elders and experienced learners in sharing their wisdom and guiding the next generation of researchers.
